SOE Alumni Talk with Kakenya Ntaiya- Kakenya’s Dream: Breaking Down Barriers to Girls’ Education

School of Education alumna Kakenya Ntaiya (PhD '11) is Founder and President of Kakenya's Dream, a nonprofit organization that protects girls in rural Kenya from child marriage and abuse and sets them on a path to higher education. She is a renowned advocate for girls' health and human rights across the globe. Kakenya will discuss the barriers to girls' education around the world, particularly in rural/remote communities, and how the holistic approach and programs at Kakenya's Dream are successfully breaking down those barriers for vulnerable girls in rural Kenya. Globally, 130 million girls around the world who should be in school are not. Evidence shows that keeping girls in school positively impacts their health, economic prosperity, and the stability of their communities, countries, and the world at large. However, barriers such as poverty, child marriage, early pregnancy, gender-based violence, and patriarchal gender norms are preventing girls from acessing a quality education across the globe. For the past decade, Kakenya's Dream has been successfully breaking down these barriers through education, community engagement, and advocacy. Today, their holistic model for girls' education and empowerment is transforming the lives of thousands of vulnerable girls and their communities across rural Kenya.
