This course introduces theories of learning, learning sciences, and how they may support¿human thriving. Throughout the course¿we explore tensions between views of learning as an individual versus social process. Specifically, we use sociocultural, situative, and cognitive theories to consider the characteristics of learning, where learning originates, how learning is constructed and mediated by social environments, the role of emotions and motivation in learning, and the intersection of learning and social change. We also consider disciplinary-based approaches to theory and knowledge construction. Additionally, throughout the course, we explore how theory can inform practice and design. We explore how learning is organized differently in different settings, which has direct implications for variation in what is learned, how it is learned, who learns it, and why.
