This course examines the meaning and value of education and its relation to equity and justice. Students gain a nuanced understanding of the varied philosophies that inform discussions about key contemporary issues in education, such as theories of knowledge, the self, the student/teacher relation, professional ethics, collective responsibility, and moral education. Philosophies and varied wisdom traditions are considered to help students contribute to their own visions of education, equity, and justice. Methods of educational philosophy are studied, including close reading, conceptual analysis, and philosophical writing. No prior experience in philosophy or social theory is required. This course is for graduate students working or studying all forms of education, including early childhood education, K-12 education, higher education, and non-formal education settings.
