All SOE faculty are encouraged to participate in the SOE Mentoring Sessions for Fall 2026.
Session I: Effective Communication in Mentoring
Facilitated by Mike Gunzenhauser
Session II: Expectations in Mentoring
Facilitated by Mike Gunzenhauser
Session III: Equity & Inclusion in Mentoring
Facilitated by Mike Gunzenhauser
These sessions are based on mentoring training models developed by the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER), based at the University of Wisconsin, and EGEC (the Equity in Graduate Education Consortium), based at the University of Southern California. The sessions meet NIH and NSF requirements for mentor training. The sessions emphasize mentoring of graduate students, but the materials are applicable to all kinds of mentoring. The sessions are keyed to Pitt's series of workshops presented by the Center for Mentoring, and participants receive credit toward the Center's certificate. Materials from this session are foundational to Individual Development Plans (IDPs) required for mentoring of all PhD students.
* Faculty are encouraged to participate in all sessions.
* Faculty need not attend prior sessions to attend subsequent sessions.
* These sessions repeat the series first conducted in February and March, 2026.
